Lend-Lease Act
An Act to Further Promote the Defense of the United States, or more commonly known as the “Lend Lease” act was enacted as law in the United States under president Roosevelt in March, 1941. The bill stated that the US would provide aid in the form of supplies such as oil, food, ammunition, and in some cases, even ships to allied nations such as France, Britain, China, and the USSR . This act was terminated in August of 1945, but while it stood, it foremost ended America’s neutrality standpoint that had been the countries foreign policy since the 1930’s. Approximately $50.1 billion worth of supplies were shipped out to other countries free of charge, although, some supplies, such as ships, were returned at the end of WWII. As well as there was the Lend Lease act, there was also reverse lend lease, or Reciprocal Aid, which was supplies and equipment given to the US. Different countries supplied different materials, for instance: New Zealand supplied food to US troops in the South Pacific, Canada gave us anti submarine outfitted ships along with photo-recon planes, and Britain gave the USAAF hundreds of Spitfire MK V and MK VIII fighter planes. The peak years that the Lend Lease act was in effect, about a quarter of Great Britain ammo came from the US, and a quarter of the planes the US shipped out went to Britain, followed by food, trucks, and ships.
