(We'll Be Singing Hallelujah) Marching Through Berlin: July 1942
Analysis by Zachary Lebrilla
Marching through Berlin originally featured in he movie "stage door canteen" in 1942. This song, written by Bob Reed and Harry Miller, contains many references to the Nazis and Adolf Hitler himself. The most stand out lyric in the song is when She calls Adolf Hitler the Devil in a different face. As well as calling the Nazis sons of Satan. After stating these it makes it Stance on the war very clear. This song is definitely pro war saying that they will be cheering whilst marching through the city of Berlin (the capital of Germany). A goal for the most part unattainable without conflict. From what i could tell was not critical of the stated foreign policy. The foreign policy when the United States entered the war was collective security. It was this because the United States joined with the Allies in their war against the Nazi’s. If it were critical of it, the song would not speak of the goal of the allies with such excitement and praise. This song shows how war affected society by shifting their views. This song and many others during the time period states their dislike for Adolf Hitler in this case calling him the devil. If it were not for the war the populous may not have known about the atrocities he had committed. I agree with the message of this song because it is hard to disagree with the dislike of Hitler, few do. I do in fact agree that Adolf Hitler was a terrible person.
